The Low Down
Relatively unchanged from the 2015 model, the 2016 Lexus NX hybrid is a compact luxury crossover, and essentially the only one in its class, aside from the Audi Q5. From its extraordinary fuel economy and classically Lexus styling, it takes the cake for being one of the most distinctively unique models ever made by Lexus. Slower than its 200t sister, the NX is more compact and less pricey than the Lexus RX 450h, with equally satisfying hybrid technology packed perfectly into a pristine and classic new crossover body.
Stepping inside this little Lexus, you’re faced with the classic interior you would expect from a luxury car, without being too flashy or obvious about it – crouching tiger hidden dragon. It gives off a sleek, modern vibe that is distinctly Lexus, plus some serious comfort to boot. The materials, as always, feel and look expensive, especially when you start looking at the two tone options (our favorite is the ivory/black combo)! Even the center console is padded for extra comfort while driving. For those of us who ride in the back, there’s lots of room to stretch out and get comfortable without being too overloaded.
The 2016 NX hybrid is a five seater compact luxury SUV crossover, and comes available in one single trim level, with – you guessed it, lots of options for add-ons.
Standard on the base model of the 300h includes: 17” wheels, automatic LED headlights/foglights/taillights, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, 60/40 split folding/reclining rear seats, premium vinyl upholstery, rear climate vents, cargo cover, and auto-dimming rearview mirror.
Premium pack swaps out for 18” wheels and adds: auto-dimming exterior mirrors, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats and driver memory settings (LOVE this feature).
Luxury pack includes all of the above PLUS power liftgate, automatic windshield wipers, heated steering wheel (yes please!), leather upholstery, and a power-folding rear seat.
Navigation pack includes a nav system and the Remote Touch electronic interface, two extra speakers, voice controls, and additional Lexus Enform smartphone apps.
Additional options include front/rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation system, upgraded LED headlights, and wireless charging tray.
The Lexus NX 300h has a gasoline-electric hybrid combo that pairs a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder to a set of electric motors and battery pack. If you choose the AWD, you add an additional electric motor for extra added traction for those of us who don’t have the luxury of California sunshine all year round! The best part of this car is, obviously, the gas mileage – sitting pretty at a 33 mpg combined for city and highway. What you can expect out of this car is a comfortable, smooth, and quiet ride, hardly having to stop for fuel every other week depending on your commute or adventure schedule.
You can pack quite a bit in the trunk, especially if you put the back seats down, making it the ideal blend between SUV and Sedan. The steering is responsive and stable, especially around corners through Malibu canyon or zipping and zapping up and down PCH.
Every NX comes equipped with traction and stability control, antilock brakes, front side airbags, full length side curtain airbags, driver knee airbag, front passenger cushion airbag that keeps riders from coming off the seat, and a rearview camera along with Lexus Enform Safety Connect – which includes automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle location, and emergency assist button.
You can also opt for extra safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal pre-collision system that comes with adaptive cruise control.
The National Highway TSA issued the 300h a five star overall rating for safety and protection, and it gained a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway!
Features equipped with the NX 300h include: 7” central display screen, rearview camera, bluetooth phone/audio, Siri Eyes Free voice control for those of you who are iPhone users, sound system with 8 speakers, HD satellite radio, CD player, AUX and USB ports, and also Enform Service Connect – providing remote vehicle status checks and maintenance alerts through your phone.
