The Low Down
Here is sunny SoCal, we’re always looking for an excuse to turn up the fun and the 2016 Jeep Wrangler is a party on wheels! Arguably a cultural icon, this convertible SUV will instantly have you feeling like Malibu Barbie 💁 (Dream house not included.) With special editions like the Black Bear, 75th Anniversary and Backcountry, there’s no better time to look into if the Wrangler is right for you.
Take your pick: two-door, four passenger four-door, or five-passenger Wrangler Unlimited! The wrangler also offers three core trim levels:
Sport for just your basics–16-inch steel wheels, removable doors, fold-down windshield, manual mirrors and locks, full metal doors with crank windows, cruise control, cloth upholstery, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack! Go with the Unlimited version for a bigger gas tank and air-conditioning.
Sahara to sweeten the deal and add power windows and locks, keyless entry, a security alarm and an auto-dimming mirror #selfielighting. The Sport S package adds on air-conditioning and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Rubicon for top notch off-road equipment! 17-inch alloy wheels, 32-inch tires, a heavy-duty Dana 44 front axle (matching the standard-spec Dana 44 rear axle), a shorter 4.10 rear-axle ratio (standard with the manual transmission, optional with the automatic), an upgraded transfer case with a lower crawl ratio, electronic front and rear locking differentials, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, rock rails, automatic headlamps and the under-hood insulation.
Special for 2016!
The Black Bear Edition has the Granite Crystal exterior trim, rock rails, a special hood decal, special cloth seats and both the Connectivity and Power Convenience groups.
There’s also the Sahara-based Backcountry and with special bumpers, rock rails, Rubicon wheels and tires, leather seating, heated front seats, Alpine sound, 75th Anniversary has special exterior paint and trim, 17-inch wheels, winch-ready steel bumpers and a “Power Dome” hood.
The Results are in and the two-door Wrangler (manual transmission) went from 0 to 60 real quick as in 6.9 seconds–notably faster than past models! It boasts a powerful and efficient 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine rated at 17 city 21 highway mpg. Also has best-in-Class 285 horsepower and kicks out 260 pound-feet of torque–incredible low-speed crawling capability! Standard four-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission with hill start assist with optional five-speed automatic with both hill start assist and hill descent control.
Stylish? Yes. Safe?
While the 2016 Wrangler has your basic antilock brakes, traction, stability control and front airbags it only received mediocre crash test scores and had long braking distances. A rearview camera isn’t available, nor are other parking or safety aids. Ideal for fun, but maybe not for moms!
Don’t let the upright dashboard fool you! The 2016 Wrangler’s tech situation is basic enough for even the most technologically challenged to navigate. There is an option to add-on the Connectivity Group (tire-pressure monitor display, Bluetooth, a trip computer and an upgraded version of the Uconnect 430 touch screen) but If you’re a tech junkie, another jeep might be a better fit!
Starting at $23,895
